The egg cortex: from maturation through fertilization.

چکیده
The peripheral layer of the egg has long been recognized as a region with special properties. Several types of experiments argue for the existence of an egg cortex (reviewed in Wilson, 1925; Chambers and Chambers, 1961; Hiramoto, 1970; Vacquier, 1981). We can cite in chronological order: micromanipulations of the egg with rods and micropipettes; low speed centrifugation experiments that stratify the egg content except for a thin layer of organelles bound to the plasma membrane; the study of the migration in a magnetic field of metal particles injected into the egg and of the elasticity of the egg surface; the isolation of a cell surface complex (or "isolated cortex") comprising the plasma membrane and adhering internal and external macromolecular structures and organelles. All these experiments point to the existence just below the egg membrane of a cortical layer a few microns thick, which is rearranged during maturation, fertilization and development (Vacquier,

Downregulation of store-operated Ca2+ entry during mammalian meiosis is required for the egg-to-embryo transition.
A specialized Ca(2+) transient at fertilization represents the universal driver for the egg-to-embryo transition. Ca(2+) signaling remodels during oocyte maturation to endow the egg with the capacity to produce the specialized Ca(2+) transient at fertilization, which takes the form of a single (e.g. Xenopus) or multiple (e.g. mouse) Ca(2+) spikes depending on the species. Store-operated Ca(2+) ...

Cell division is inherently mechanical, with cell mechanics being a critical determinant governing the cell shape changes that accompany progression through the cell cycle. The mechanical properties of symmetrically dividing mitotic cells have been well characterized, whereas the contribution of cellular mechanics to the strikingly asymmetric divisions of female meiosis is very poorly understoo...

Ca(2+) is the universal signal for egg activation at fertilization in all sexually reproducing species. The Ca(2+) signal at fertilization is necessary for egg activation and exhibits specialized spatial and temporal dynamics. Eggs acquire the ability to produce the fertilization-specific Ca(2+) signal during oocyte maturation. However, the mechanisms regulating Ca(2+) signaling differentiation...
متن کاملA Rho-signaling pathway mediates cortical granule translocation in the sea urchin oocyte
Cortical granules are secretory vesicles of the egg that play a fundamental role in preventing polyspermy at fertilization. In the sea urchin egg, they localize directly beneath the plasma membrane forming a compact monolayer and, upon fertilization, undergo a Ca(2+)-dependent exocytosis. Cortical granules form during early oogenesis and, during maturation, translocate from the cytosol to the o...
متن کاملCortical granules of the sea urchin translocate early in oocyte maturation.
Cortical granules are secretory vesicles poised at the cortex of an egg that, upon stimulation by sperm contact at fertilization, secrete their contents. These contents modify the extracellular environment and block additional sperm from reaching the egg. The role of cortical granules in blocking polyspermy is conserved throughout much of phylogeny. In the sea urchin, cortical granules accumula...
